Pre-Production Planning

Planning your VoDs like the pros

Pre-production is earliest stage of any creative project. You might be thinking, "isn't that just for films? Do I really need it for online content?" Yes. Yes you do.

It's much simpler to create a video when you have the elements already planned. This applies to both live streams and offline content; it'll improve the quality of both. An added benefit for offline content: it'll make editing much easier.

For the purpose of this guide, we're going to focus on storyboarding an offline VoD. Storyboarding a video is the same as working on a draft when you're writing, it's all about getting your ideas down and refining them.

Storyboarding VoD

1. The Brainstorm

Think about topics that you could create a video around, for example something that really resonated with your audience during one of your streams. Get these ideas down on paper and select one to proceed with. Make sure you take the time to think about why you chose this idea and how it fits with your brand and channel. Lastly, think about how long you want the video to be - how much do you have to say about this topic?

2. The Timeline

Now you can start actually working on your video's story. Start by outlining the beginning, the middle, and the end. Preparing the structure of your video beforehand will help you make any necessary tweaks before you start shooting. It'll also allow you to challenge your ideas and flesh them out.

3. The Shot List

Now that you have the timeline ready, it's time to get those shots dialed so you can shoot efficiently. You can do something simple, like setting up your webcam a certain way, or get really creative with a lighting setup, for example. This is also a good opportunity to work on determining what overlays/graphics you want to use and where you're going to place the elements in the frame.

The more work you put into this stage, the better your output will be. Start planning your videos and you'll be producing content like a professional in no time.
